Introduction

Explore one of the world’s last great wildernesses from a local’s perspective! Led by an expert local guide, this action-packed 8-day group tour gives you exclusive access to some of South Greenland’s most remarkable features with excursions to Viking ruins, remote Inuit settlements, ice-choked fjords, and massive glaciers. With accommodations at five unique locations, including a Greenlandic farm, this tour also includes an amazing ice trekking adventure, a thrilling helicopter ride, and plenty of free time for optional activities like ice climbing or kayaking.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival to Narsarsuaq & Free Time to Explore
Depart from Reykjavik Domestic Airport for a three-hour flight to Narsarsuaq Airport in Greenland, where you are greeted and transferred to your hotel in Narsarsuaq. After settling in, the afternoon is free for you to partake in an optional excursion, such as kayaking or a scenic hike or mountain bike trip through the picturesque “Flower Valley” towards the ice sheet 9 km out of town. Spend the night in a double room with private facilities at Hotel Narsarsuaq.

Optional activities: Helicopter tour, hiking, mountain biking, or sea kayaking (kayaks and mountain bikes can be hired in Narsarsuaq).

Day 2: Brattahlid Viking Ruins and the "Bay of Icebergs"
Follow in the footsteps of the Vikings! Travel by motorboat from Narsarsuaq to the tiny village of Qassiarsuk for a visit to Brattahlíð, the remains of the settlement founded by the infamous Viking Erik the Red, the first documented Norse settler in Greenland in 982 A.D. Here, a knowledgeable local guide will show you around a replica of Erik’s farm and Thjodhild’s Church, now an open-air museum.

Afterwards, enjoy a tasty lunch at the Leif Eriksson Hostel, named after the great explorer and son of Erik the Red, who used this area as the starting point for his historic voyage to “Vinland” in North America around 1000 A.D.

In the afternoon a thrilling 4x4 excursion brings you to Tasiusaq, known locally as the “Bay of Icebergs”, an isolated community of just seven people that earns its nickname from the Sermilik fjord, which is almost always full of icebergs from Eqaloruutsit glacier. Return to Narsarsuaq in the evening and spend another night at Hotel Narsarsuaq.

Optional activity: Kayak excursion at Tasiusaq.

Day 3: Greenlandic Farm Experience
It’s not every day that you get to visit a farm that offers great views of icebergs! Start the day with a scenic ride to Innerulalik, an idyllic Greenlandic farm surrounded by crystal clear lakes, green hillsides, and impressive views of ice drifting in the fjord. Here, you will enjoy a first-hand experience of the local culture as you learn about the daily life on a Greenlandic farm from the friendly farm family. Later in the evening, enjoy a delicious farm-fresh dinner prepared by your generous hosts. Spend the night on the farm in a cosy double room with shared facilities.

Optional activity: hike around the mountains and lakes near the farm.

Day 4: Qoorooq Icefjord and Igaliko
In the morning, sail through a maze of icebergs in the incredible Qoorooq Icefjord and enjoy spectacular views of the Qoorooq glacier. The tour then continues to Itilleq followed by an easy hike across Kongevejen, or the “Path of the Kings”, towards charming Igaliko, a tiny Inuit settlement with around 40 people. Known as one of the most beautiful settlements in Greenland, Igaliku is also home to the ruins of Gardar, the archdiocese and religious capital during the Viking era. Spend the night at the Igaliko Country Hotel in a double room with shared facilities.

Day 5: Free Time to Explore Narsaq
Hike back to the settlement of Itilleq and continue by boat to Narsaq, the third most populated town in South Greenland with about 1700 inhabitants. Here, you will have plenty of free time to visit the local market and handicraft shops along with the hunters harbour and the local museum.

Narsaq is also an excellent base for day tours and optional excursions into the surrounding areas, such as sea kayaking or hiking trips with impressive views over the town. Spend the night at Hotel Narsaq in a double room with private facilities.

Optional activities: sea kayaking; Viking Tour; glacier walk; guided walking tour; Kaffemik with a Greenlandic family; guided hikes to Tasiigaaq, Qaqqarsuaq, or Kvanefjeld; or an ice climbing adventure.

Day 6: Qaleraliq Camp and Ice Trekking Adventure
Today’s incredible adventure takes you by zodiac boat past sheer glacier fronts with imposing ice walls and numerous icebergs. The destination is the Qaleraliq Camp, an ideal starting point for exploring the spectacular surroundings of the Qaleraliq glacier.

After arriving to the camp, get ready for an experience of a lifetime—an exhilarating ice trek on one of the oldest masses of ice on the planet! Slip your feet into some crampons for an amazing journey into a labyrinth of ice, where an expert mountain guide and glacier specialist will bring you up close to extraordinary ice formations such as crevasses, drains, caves, and seracs. Return to Narsaq in the evening and spend the night at Hotel Narsaq.

Please note: the guided ice trek is suitable for all travellers of reasonable health and fitness levels; no prior experience is necessary. Crampons and any other essential gear will be provided on location at the camp.

Day 7: Qaqortoq, Capital of South Greenland
Travel by boat to Qaqortoq, the “Capital of South Greenland”, a charming town with about 3,000 inhabitants. Founded in 1775, Qaqortoq is one of the most historic and picturesque towns in all of Greenland as you will discover during a short guided tour around town, with attractions including the old colonial era buildings and the various rock sculptures created by local artists.

The rest of the day is yours to explore Qaqortoq as you wish, perhaps with a visit to the local museum, the fur shops, the traditional kayak club, the church, or the old fountain in the city centre. Dinner is also at your leisure this evening at one of the town’s cosy restaurants. Spend the night at Hotel Qaqortoq in a double room with private facilities.

Optional activities: day tour to the Norse ruins at Hvalsey and Upernaviarsuk agricultural centre, excursion to the hot springs at Uunartoq, or sea angling tours.

Day 8: Helicopter to Narsarsuaq & Return to Iceland
On your final day in Greenland, what better way to end an amazing tour than with an impressive helicopter ride back to Narsarsuaq? No matter the route, this is always an unforgettable experience! From up above, you’ll be able to retrace your journey while enjoying the fascinating aerial scenery of the fjords and ice sheet below. From Narsarsuaq, fly back to Reykjavík, where you will connect onwards to your final destination.
