Introduction

If you’re looking for a real winter wonderland, look no further than Greenland—gateway to the North Pole! Greenland’s west coast comes alive in winter with beautiful snowy landscapes, brilliant displays of northern lights, warm hospitality, and unique experiences for travellers of all ages. Experience the thrill of the Arctic with exciting excursions like dog-sledding or iceberg tours in Ilulissat and immerse yourself in the rich local culture of Nuuk, Greenland’s cosy capital.

Itinerary

Day 1: Northern Lights
In the afternoon, fly to the charming Arctic village of Ilulissat (Jakobshavn), beautifully situated at the mouth of the Ilulissat Icefjord. Upon arrival, you are transferred to your comfortable hotel where you will spend the next three nights. Once you’ve settled in, enjoy the rest of the afternoon as you wish, perhaps with a walk by the sea. Later, after enjoying a delicious welcome dinner at Hotel Arctic, you may see the northern lights dancing in the sky!*

* Please note that the northern lights (aurora borealis) are a natural phenomenon and sightings cannot be guaranteed.

Day 2: Cool Ilulissat
Today, the sky is the limit! You can choose from an array of exciting optional excursions in the Ilulissat area, all of which can be booked locally at your accommodation. Imagine sailing among giant icebergs or other awe-inspiring activities such as helicopter rides over the massive Sermeq Kujalleq ice sheet, dog-sledding tours, cultural demonstrations, and village tours. Hiking enthusiasts may also be interested in a guided trek to an old settlement dating back to 4,500 years ago in the nearby Sermermiut Valley

Day 3: Welcome to Nuuk
Fly to Nuuk today. After settling in, take a stroll around the city centre, relax in a cosy cafe with a delicious Greenlandic coffee, or spend the evening as you wish.

Day 4: World's Smallest Capital City
As the oldest and largest city in Greenland, Nuuk offers something for everyone! Get a feel for the local way of life with a guided city tour, including highlights such as the old colonial harbour, the famous Qilakitsoq mummies, the Greenlandic national costume,Qajak and relics from Greenland’s past (optional tour). Or you might wish to enjoy Nuuk however you please. Some options include relaxing at the Katuaq cultural centre or visiting the world’s largest post box - containing letters addressed to Santa Claus from children all over the world.

Day 5: Departure
When the time has come to say farewell to this winter wonderland, head to the Nuuk airstrip, where a short flight takes you back to Iceland. If your flight is in the afternoon, you can squeeze in some last-minute souvenir shopping or a short optional excursion in the morning.

Please note: This tour can be customized for flights from Denmark to Greenland, with arrival Monday-Saturday. Or reversed to fit flight schedule from Iceland to Greenland.

Booking
• Advanced booking of three weeks prior to departure is recommended. Booking early allows us to better accommodate your desired arrangements.
• This tour can be customized to meet your needs, including additional nights in Reykjavik and/or Greenland on request. We can also arrange accommodation in Reykjavik or combine other Iceland packages with this tour.

Other
• This tour originates in Iceland. Due to flight times between Iceland and Greenland, travellers may wish to spend an extra night in Reykjavik both before and after the tour. Our travel consultants can assist with booking accommodation in Reykjavik on request.
• The winter climate in Greenland can be quite unpredictable with average temperatures ranging from -3 to -20° Celsius. Due to Arctic conditions and sudden weather changes, we recommend bringing warm, weatherproof outerwear, thermal layers, and insulated walking boots. It is also ideal to bring sunglasses since the sun’s reflection on the snow is very bright.
• The itinerary can change without notice due to weather conditions.
• The currency in Greenland is Danish Krona (DKK). Credit cards are not widely accepted, thus we recommend bringing some Danish currency or a debit card (bank card) with a 4-digit PIN number for cash withdrawals at ATM machines.
• See our Travel Guide for more information about weather conditions, what to pack, currency and other practical information about travelling in Greenland.

Optional excursions in Ilulissat:
• Helicopter tour over the glacier.
• Guided hike to the old settlement at the Icefjord.
• Iceberg cruise.
• Dog-sledding in Ilulissat (only available November - March):
    • “Around the World” (1 hour).
    • “The Viewpoint” (2 hours).
    • “Allaniarfik” (3 hours).
    • Longer tours available upon request.

For prices and availability of optional excursions, please contact us.
