South Greenland offers amazing contrasts, from the intense green landscapes and colourful villages to Viking ruins and the awe-inspiring beauty of glaciers spilling into the sea. Led by an experienced local guide, this 5-day group tour brings you up close to this region‘s most incredible features with various boating safaris through ice-filled fjords, scenic walks, and a thrilling 4x4 adventure to a remote Inuit settlement surrounded by giant icebergs. You‘ll also have free time for meeting the locals, exploring small towns, and optional activities like hiking or kayaking.

Day 1: Welcome to South Greenland
Depart from Reykjavik Domestic Airport for a three-hour flight to Narsarsuaq Airport in Greenland, where you are greeted and transferred to your hotel in Narsarsuaq. After settling in, the afternoon is free for you to partake in an optional excursion, such as kayaking or a scenic hike or mountain bike trip through the picturesque “Flower Valley” towards the ice sheet 9 km out of town. Spend the night in a double room with private facilities at Hotel Narsarsuaq.
Optional activities: Helicopter tour, hiking, mountain biking, or sea kayaking (kayaks and mountain bikes can be hired in Narsarsuaq).
Day 2: Brattahlid Viking Ruins and the "Bay of Icebergs"
Follow in the footsteps of the Vikings! Travel by motorboat from Narsarsuaq to the tiny village of Qassiarsuk for a visit to Brattahlíð, the remains of the settlement founded by the infamous Viking Erik the Red, the first documented Norse settler in Greenland in 982 A.D. Here, a knowledgeable local guide will show you around a replica of Erik’s farm and Thjodhild’s Church, now an open-air museum.
Afterwards, enjoy a tasty lunch at the Leif Eriksson Hostel, named after the great explorer and son of Erik the Red, who used this area as the starting point for his historic voyage to “Vinland” in North America around 1,000.
A.D. In the afternoon a thrilling 4x4 excursion brings you to Tasiusaq, known locally as the “Bay of Icebergs”, an isolated community of just seven people that earns its nickname from the Sermilik fjord, which is almost always full of icebergs from Eqaloruutsit glacier. Return to Narsarsuaq in the evening and spend another night at Hotel Narsarsuaq.
Optional activity: Kayak excursion at Tasiusaq.
Day 3: Free Time to Explore Narsaq
Travel by boat to Narsaq, the third most populated town in South Greenland with about 1,700 inhabitants. Here, you will have plenty of free time to visit the local market and handicraft shops along with the hunters harbour and the local museum.
Narsaq is also an excellent starting point for day tours and optional excursions into the surrounding areas, such as sea kayaking or hiking trips with impressive views over the town. Return to Narsarsuaq in the afternoon and spend another night at Hotel Narsarsuaq.
Optional activities: sea kayaking; Viking Tour; glacier walk; guided walking tour; Kaffemik with a Greenlandic family; guided hikes to Tasiigaaq, Qaqqarsuaq, or Kvanefjeld; or an ice climbing adventure.
Day 4: Qoorooq Icefjord and Igaliko*
In the morning, travel by boat to the small village of Itilleq followed by an easy hike across Kongevejen, or the “Path of the Kings”, towards charming Igaliku, a tiny Inuit settlement with around 40 people. Known as one of the most beautiful settlements in Greenland, Igaliko is also home to the ruins of Gardar, the archdiocese and religious capital during the Viking era. On the way back, enjoy spectacular views of the Qoorooq glacier as the boat sails through a maze of icebergs in the incredible Qoorooq Icefjord. Spend another night at Hotel Narsarsuaq.
Day 5: Goodbye Greenland
When the time has come to say farewell to this magnificent land, you are transferred from your hotel to the airport in Narsarsuaq for your departure flight to Reykjavík. If your flight is in the afternoon, you can squeeze in some last-minute souvenir shopping or a short optional excursion in the morning.
