Introduction

Experience a whirlwind of Arctic nature, culture, and adventure with this short activity break in West Greenland! Get acquainted with the charming town of Ilulissat and its hardy inhabitants with a cultural tour and enjoy a taste of the Arctic way of life with a visit to a husky kennel and a dog-sledding excursion. This amazing getaway also gives you some free time to explore on your own along with a range of exciting optional day tours to choose from.

Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to the Arctic!
Depart from Iceland and arrive in the charming Ilulissat (Jakobshavn), beautifully situated at the mouth of the 56 kilometre-long Ilulissat Icefjord. Upon arrival, you are transported to your accommodation for the next four nights. After settling in, enjoy a delicious welcome dinner at Hotel Arctic prepared by award-winning chefs while enjoying the view of the beautiful Icefjord.

Day 2: Meet the Locals
Get to know Ilulissat and its people with a guided culture walk! Your guide will tell you about the history of the city, the native Greenlandic culture, and the daily lives of the Arctic Circle’s hardy inhabitants. The tour also includes a visit to local fishermen at the harbour and local hunters at the “Brædtet” trading post as well as a stop to the birthplace of the famous explorer Knud Rasmussen.

Once you’ve gotten to know the town and the people, it’s time to get acquainted with Ilulissat’s four-legged residents! On this excursion, you are invited to take part in the feeding of about 20 hungry sled dogs. The dog handler will also demonstrate how to operate a dog sled, harness, and whip, and describe the daily life of a hard-working husky in Greenland.

Here in the far north, wintertime is known as “sled-time” as Ilulissat experiences six to seven months of hard winter every year. In these harsh conditions, modern machinery is still no match for the old Greenlandic way of transportation—the Inuit dog sled. In fact, fishermen still use these strong dogs to transport halibut from the Icefjord to Ilulissat. These dogs are such a vital part of traditional Greenlandic life that they number around 6,000 in Ilulissat, more than the town’s human population!

After the sled dog visit, the rest of the afternoon is free to spend however you please.

Day 3: Traditional Arctic Transportation...
Today is your chance to spend more time with the furry friends you met yesterday and experience firsthand the traditional mode of transportation in the Arctic! Enjoy a 3 hour dog-sledding tour to a small hunting cabin at Aallaniarfik, beautifully situated at the edge of the Icefjord about 15 kilometres from Ilulissat. On the journey to the cabin, the trail weaves through rugged, hilly terrain so you get a good feeling for the dogs’ abilities to pull a sled. Upon return to Ilulissat, you can enjoy the rest of the day as you wish.

Please note: if there are two people travelling together they will be paired together on one sled; solo sleds can also be arranged for an additional fee.

Day 4: Icebergs, Northern Lights and Much More!
The sky is the limit as you get to choose how to spend your last day in Greenland. Imagine sailing among icebergs weighing up to seven million tons—giant chunks of ice as big as multi-story office buildings! You can experience this in person or other awe-inspiring optional tours in the Ilulissat area, including:

• helicopter rides over the icebergs (Min. 14 participants)
• iceberg cruises
• motorboat tours to the Eqi glacier with its enormous pieces of calved ice
• cultural demonstrations and village walks
• Excursions to small, remote settlements in the area
• Hiking on marked trails in the tranquil Sermermiut Valley just a few kilometres from Ilulissat

No matter how you choose to experience Greenland today and tomorrow, you can book any guided activity of your choice in advance or locally at your hotel in Ilulissat.
Our last night in Ilulissat you will have a farewell dinner at Hotel Arctic.

Day 5: Departure
Today, it’s time to say goodbye to this majestic land. Transportation is provided to the Illulissat airstrip for the short flight to Nuuk, where you will depart for Iceland.

Please note: This tour can be customized for flights from Denmark to Greenland, with arrival Monday-Saturday.
