Introduction

Nuuk, the capital of Greenland is situated in a grand fjord system with the towering Mt. Sermistiaq as a backdrop. In Nuuk you will find rich cultural life as well as thriving wildlife and amazing natural sights. This package includes accommodation at the four-star Hotel Hans Egede as well as guided tours in and around the fascinating areas surrounding the capital.

Itinerary

Friday: Arrival in Nuuk
The tour starts from Keflavik Intl. airport where you will depart to Nuuk at 12:00 and arrive at 13:20 local time. In Nuuk you will be welcomed by a local representative who will take you on a short sighteeing tour around the city. Check-in at your hotel and you can enjoy the late afternoon walking around the old city centre by the harbour. A visit to the National Museum would be ideal to see the fascinating 15th century mummies, as well as enjoying a cup of coffee at Katuaq cultural centre. Stay at Hotel Hans Egede in the heart of the city.

Saturday: Whales and Wildlife
You have the first half of the day to explore Nuuk, perhaps do some shopping, visit the Art Museum etc. At 16:00, you will enjoy a whale-watching tour in the beautiful surroundings of Nuuk with a view of Mt. Sermitsiaq and the small islands around the capital. Besides humpback whales playing nearby the boat, you have a good chance to sea seals eagles and other sea-mammals.

Sunday: Boat trip to Ice-Fjord
Today, we will take you on a amazing 6-hours boat-journey to view abundance of icebergs and vast bird-life. Kangersuneq Icefjord is filled with blue and white icebergs from the two glaciers at the bottom of the fiord. The boat goes as close to the glacier-front as possible and lunch is enjoyed overlooking the glacier. After lunch the boat passes a huge bird cliff on the way to Qoornoq, where it will be possible to go ashore. Qoornoq is a settlement which is no longer permanently inhabited, but the old and well kept houses are used for summer dwellings from residents of Nuuk. Be sure to visit the newly restored church. After app. 1 hour stay in Qoornoq the trip goes back to Nuuk with arrival around 15:00.

Monday: Visit to Local Family, Inuit Culture and Departure
Get a glimpse into Inuit culture including the life of the hunters and their kayaks. We will start the tour at the skin-workshop, visit a kayak workshop and the local meat-market before visiting a local family of a traditional bead embroiderer. A family member will offer you coffee or tea and show you how you make bead embroidery for the traditional Greenlandic costume. You will then be introduced to the fascinating story behind the costume, before heading back to the hotel. Transfer from your hotel to Nuuk Airport in time for your afternoon departure-flight.
