Greenland, the planet’s biggest island, offers one of the world’s most remote, tranquil and beautiful outbacks one can imagine. South Greenland is famous for its green hills contrasted by icebergs, its vast landscapes, utter serenity, friendly locals and fascinating Viking ruins. Please note that this tour is self-guided, except of the guided tour at the Viking ruins at Brattahlíð.
Monday: Arrival in Narsarsuaq
After a three hours flight from Reykjavík, you are welcomed at Narsarsuaq Airport and informed about the tours in South Greenland. You have the afternoon free to explore the near surroundings. Kayaks and mountain bikes can be hired in Narsarsuaq. The ice-sheet is about 9km away from Narsarsuaq through the fertile “Flower Valley” and it is ideal to have a walk and/or bicycle to enjoy the near scenery. Stay the night at Hotel Narsarsuaq.
Tuesday: Norse Ruins
Today you will head out to Brattahlíð (Qassiarsuk), to the trail of the infamous Viking Eric the Red, the first documented westerner in Greenland, who settled in Brattahlíð in 982. A guide will take you to a reconstruction of Erik the Red’s farm and Thjodhilde’s Church, which serves as an open-air museum. Today, the area has about 50 residents, mainly sheep farmers, but the village also boasts a school,
a church and a shop. In the afternoon you can hike from Qassiarsuk along the gravel road towards the fjord Sermilik. Half the way, there is an amazing view over both fjords; Sermilik usually filled with ice. The landscape is wild and covered with small, blue lakes. If you follow the road all the way, it ends up at the sheep farm Tasiusaq (16 km return). You can also relax at the cosy Café Brattahlid. Stay the night at Hotel Narsarsuaq.
Wednesday: A Day in Qaqortoq
Take a boat journey to the beautiful village of Qaqortoq and enjoy the day exploring the area. It is ideal to pay a visit to Great Greenland with tannery and sewing facilities for creating beautiful sealskin clothes and the local museum. There are many short hikes around town possible including the big lake. Then, there are exciting optional activities and tours at the local tourist office (bookable on location). Stay the night at Hotel Narsarsuaq.
Thursday: Ice Fjord Tour & Departure
At 09:00 you are taken on a boat trip to the Qooroq ‘Ice Fjord’ where you will cruise among the icebergs towards Qooroq Glacier, which produces more than 250 million tons of icebergs each summer. The captain will stop the engine for you to hear the cracks in the ice while you drift in the amazing surroundings and enjoy the stunning panorama. You will have the opportunity to gather ice for your drink and listen to the fizzing sound that thousands-of-years-old air bubbles make when escaping the ice. Arrive back to Narsarsuaq in time for your departure-flight at 14:45 to Reykjavik. Overnight in Reykjavík (not included in package/can be added on request).
