Introduction

South Greenland is famous for its green hills contrasted by icebergs, its vast landscapes, utter serenity, friendly locals and fascinating Viking ruins. Please note that this tour is self-guided, except of the guided tour at the Viking ruins at Brattahlíð.

Itinerary

Thursday/Tuesday: Arrival
Departure from Reykjavik local airport where you will take the three-hour flight to Narsarsuaq airport. Arrival at 14:45 local time. There, you will be welcomed and receive information on your tour. Then, you will travel by boat from Narsarsuaq to the charming village of Qaqortoq. Around the town, you will encounter sculptures carved into rocks and stones - a part of the famous project "Stone & People", where different sculptors have made the town a big sculpture park. Greenland's oldest fountain is situated at the town square next to the harbour. Here you can sit and watch the hunters and anglers arriving with today's catch for the market. It is ideal to pay a visit to the local tourist office in the afternoon to enquire about possible excursions/activities for the following day. Accommodation at Hotel Qaqortoq.

Friday/Wednesday: A day in Qaqortoq
Enjoy the day exploring the area. It is ideal to pay a visit to Great Greenland with tannery and sewing facilities for creating beautiful sealskin clothes and the local museum.
There are many short hikes around town possible including the big lake. Then, there are exciting optional activities and tours at the local tourist office such as kayak sailing, fishing trips and a tour to the hot springs on the island of Uunartoq (bookable on location). Accommodation at Hotel Qaqortoq.

Saturday/Thursday: Norse Ruins and Sheep Farms
After a good breakfast, you will depart at 09:00 to by boat to Hvalsø Church Ruin. Here we make a one-hour stop and you can walk around these amazing ruins from the Norse period. The boat continues to the village Igaliku. Igaliko was the Episcopal seat during the Norse period, and old ruins are scattered around the region. Today, the village thrives on sheep farming on the luscious grassland that reaches down to the deep blue ocean. On the other side of the fjord, Mt. Illerfissalik (1752 m.) towers above the scenery.
Accommodation at Igaliku Cabins for one night.

Sunday/Friday: On the Trail of the Vikings
In the morning you can walk the 3 km at the "Kings Road" (from Igaliku to Itilleq. The hike is easy, but you can also get a ride with the car, which is transporting your luggage.
Head out to Brattahlíð (Qassiarsuk), to the trail of the infamous Viking Eric the Red, the first documented westerner in Greeenland , who settled in Brattahlíð in 982. A guide will take you to a reconstruction of Erik the Red’s farm and Thjodhilde’s Church, which serves as an open-air museum. Today, the area has about 50 residents, mainly sheep farmers, but the village also boasts a school, a church and a shop.
In the late afternoon, you will continue by boat to Narsarsuaq and stay the night at Hotel Narsarsuaq.

Monday/Saturday: Ice Fjord Boat Tour
Take a boat tour early morning to the Qooroq ‘Ice Fjord’ where you will cruise among the icebergs towards Qooroq Glacier, which produces more than 250 million tons of icebergs each summer. The captain will stop the engine for you to hear the cracks in the ice while you drift in the amazing surroundings and enjoy the stunning panorama. You will have the opportunity to gather ice for your drink and listen to the fizzing sound that thousands-of-years-old air bubbles make when escaping the ice.
Arrive back to Narsarsuaq in time for your departure-flight at 15:45. Arrival at Reykjavik domestic airport at 20:45 local time. Overnight in Reykjavík (not included in package/can be added on request).
