From Vikings to Icebergs

Board your flight from Iceland to the Arctic village of Ilulissat in Greenland. Ilulissat is located at the mouth of the 56-kilometre (34-mile) long Ilulissat Icefjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. On a sunny day, you’ll have expansive views over the Greenland ice cap from the plane.

On arrival in Greenland, you will be transferred to your accommodation. Then you will join a guided city walk to learn more about Ilulissat. In the evening, enjoy a 2-course welcome dinner. You will spend the next 3 nights in Ilulissat.

For the next 2 days you can choose your own adventure! You can pick from a wide range of exciting optional excursions, including a helicopter ride over nearby icebergs, a motorboat tour to the Eqi glacier, cultural demonstrations and village walks. Or why not go on a whale watching safari or excursion to the small, remote settlements in the area? Fill your days with unique activities to make the most of your time in Greenland.

You can explore more of Ilulissat today. Take your opportunity to buy a local souvenir. A popular gift is a “tupilak”, an Inuit version of a talisman or voodoo doll. Traditional tupilaks were sculpted into tiny creatures inspired by Inuit mythology.

You can also go hiking to the viewing point of the Ilulissat icefjord. Here you’ll get a breathtaking look at the huge icebergs coming from the bottom of the fjord. There are more hiking options if you are interested in exploring the surroundings further.

Today, you will board a flight to your next Greenlandic stop, the small and friendly capital city of Nuuk. Upon arrival, you will take a taxi to your hotel. After settling in at your hotel, the rest of the day is free for you to spend at your leisure.

For a good overview of Greenlandic history and culture, you could spend some time at the National Museum. It houses a large collection of objects such as kayaks, the similar “umiaks” and ceremonial costumes. The Nuuk Art Museum also contains many traditional artworks. For a taste of more modern culture and art, head to the Katuaq Cultural Centre, which is a great spot for a leisurely coffee break.

Spend the night in Nuuk.

Board another flight, this time from Nuuk to Narsarsuaq. After landing in Narsarsuaq, take a bus from the airport to the local pier to join a boat transfer sailing through Tunulliarfik over to the town of Qaqortog. Upon arrival you'll take a transfer from the pier to your hotel, then enjoy the rest of the day at your leisure. 

Spend the night in Qaqortog.

Today, enjoy exploring Qaqortoq by yourself and with a guided city walk. Qaqortoq is often described as the most beautiful town in Greenland and that's thanks to its stunning surroundings, as the town is nestled between the Tasermiut fjord and the lake of Tasersuaq.

During your guided tour, you'll get to admire stone sculptures and carvings dotted around the town. You'll also get an insight into the history of Qaqortoq, giving you a greater understanding of the living conditions in southern Greenland.

Spend another night in Qaqortog.

You have a free day to explore more of Qaqortoq or join thrilling excursions depending on your interests. You could take a boat tour to Eriksfjord, also known as Tunulliarfik. The fjord is named after Erik the Red, a Norse explorer whose farm you can even visit here. Erik controlled the Nordic settlements in Greenland and his son, Leif, went on to be the first European explorer in North America. You could also head further afield on a boat tour to see Qooroq icefjord. If you enjoy hiking, guided walks on the ice cap are also available.

Spend another night in Qaqortog.

Today you'll travel by helicopter to Narsarsuaq.* You’ll fly at low altitude to take in the magnificent Arctic landscape, so don’t forget your camera. The rest of the day is at your leisure.

Stay the night in Narsarsuaq.

*On the days where the helicopter transfer between Qaqortoq and Narsarsuaq isn’t available, you’ll make the journey via scenic boat ride.

Today it’s time to say goodbye to this majestic island. On the return flight to Iceland, enjoy the stunning views over the beautiful landscapes. As we say in Greenland, “angalalluarina” (have a good trip)!
