Day 2: Norse Ruins & Scenic Nature Hike

Want to follow in the footsteps of Vikings? Today we recommend taking a boat ride to the tiny village of Qassiarsuk (optional; not included). Here you can enjoy a self-guided tour around the village and Norse sites, including a replica of the first Christian church on the North American continent and Brattahlíð, the 10th century remains of the estate founded by famous Viking explorer Erik the Red.

Another good idea in Qassiarsuk is a walk along the gravel road towards Tasiusaq—a route with amazing views over Sermilik fjord, which is typically filled with calved ice in the summer. (Optional; 16 km round-trip). A day trip to Qassiarsuk can take anywhere from three hours to a full day depending on your interests, and the timetable for the boat ride back is flexible.

Spend another night at Narsarsuaq.

Highlights:

Optional:

  • Self-guided tour of Viking sites at Qassiarsuk

Day 3: Nuuk - Smallest Capital in the World

You have the morning to sleep in or to do some last minute sightseeing. Then in the afternoon, you will board your flight to your next stop, the small and friendly capital city of Nuuk. After arriving and settling in at your hotel, the rest of the day is at your leisure.

For a good overview of Greenlandic history and culture, spend some time at the National Museum, which houses a large collection of relics such as kayaks, umiaks and ceremonial costumes. The Nuuk Art Museum also contains many traditional artworks. For a taste of more modern culture and art, head to the Katuaq cultural centre, which is also a great place for a coffee break.

Day 4: Free Time for Nature & Culture

Since much of Greenland’s culture is rooted in nature, why not take a small break from the city? This day is free for you to enjoy your own adventures, such as a sailing tour through the Kangeq fjord to the Island of Hope, a city sightseeing tour, a boat safari focused on nature and wildlife or even a helicopter trip over the Inland Ice Cap.

Excursions like these can be booked locally from your hotel or in advance with your travel consultant.

Highlights:

Optional:

  • Guided city sightseeing tours
  • 'Ancient times' city walk
  • Fishing tours
  • Boat tours to Kangersuneq Icefjord, Nuup Narsaa, Kangeq or Qooqqut.

Day 5: Icebergs Under the Midnight Sun in Ilulissat

Start the day with a flight to the charming Arctic village of Ilulissat, a town known for its stunning scenery. After being transferred to your accommodation, you have some free time to explore your surroundings or just relax and enjoy the views.

Then in the evening, you will set out for an exciting sailing tour in the majestic Ilulissat Icefjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that awes visitors with its maze of giant icebergs illuminated by the glow of the midnight sun.

Spend the next three nights in Ilulissat.

Highlights:

Included:

  • Late evening ‘midnight sun’ sailing tour among icebergs

Day 6 & 7: Choose Your Own Adventures in Ilulissat

For the next two days, the sky is the limit! You can choose from an array of exciting optional excursions in the Ilulissat area, such helicopter rides over the ice cap, boat rides among the icebergs, cultural demonstrations, and tours to remote settlements or whale watching — just to name a few options.

If you’re up for a hike, the tranquil Sermermiut Valley just a few kilometres from town offers spectacular views from a number of marked trails that you can explore at your own pace.

Note: We recommend booking optional activities in advance with your travel consultant, but you may also books tour through at your hotel’s information desk.

Highlights:

Optional:

  • Whale watching safari (when in season)
  • Helicopter tours
  • Sightseeing flights
  • Guided hikes
  • Cultural evenings
  • Boat tour to Eqi Glacier
  • Excursions to remote settlements

Day 8: Return to Iceland

Today it’s time to say goodbye to this majestic land, but you still have time to do some last-minute souvenir shopping. On the return flight to Reykjavík in the afternoon, enjoy the stunning views over the Ilulissat Icefjord and its surrounding landscapes. As we say in Greenland, angalalluarina (“have a good trip”)!
