Itinerary

A day-by-day plan to guide your arctic adventure.

  • Day 1: Arrival to the Arctic!

Depart from Reykjavik Domestic Airport for a 3,5 hour flight to the charming Arctic village of Ilulissat, beautifully situated at the mouth of the 56 kilometre-long Ilulissat Icefjord. On arrival, you will be transferred to your accommodation for the next four nights.

    Attractions
  • Day 2: Experience Ilulissat & Meet The Pioneering People

During the following days, you will get a chance to explore Ilulissat, which is known for the giant icebergs surrounding this Arctic town. It‘s the perfect destination to relax, enjoy nature and experience true Arctic life. You will find delicious local cuisine, museums, hiking trails and of course, the beautiful Greenlandic Huskies. We recommend exploring the town on your own or booking a tour with a knowledgeable guide who will offer insight into the history of the village. Enjoy exploring,  and for tonight we recommend heading out to search for the northern lights. During the dark winter nights in the north when the sky is clear you can see the beautiful northern lights dancing and flickering over Ilulissat (if conditions are favourable*). We recommend booking a guided northern lights tour.

*Please keep in mind that the northern lights are a natural phenomenon, sightings cannot be guaranteed.

  • Day 3: Experience Unique Surroundings And Breathtaking Nature

Today we recommend that you select one of the many activities that our hand-picked suppliers offer. For example, you can take a tour to get to know some Greenlandic settlements just a short boat ride away. Another option is to hike to the Icefjord, situated close to the the town of Ilulissat. The short hike to the fjord allows you time to enjoy the incredible landscape and beautiful icebergs floating in the fjord. This hike is also available as a guided tour from one of our our local suppliers.

  • Day 4: Experience Greenlandic Traditions

Today’s adventure is your choice. We recommend that you try the traditional mode of transportation in the Arctic, dog-sledding! The tours are led by an experienced local musher, and you get to enjoy the surroundings and experience with the local dogs, eager to lead you on a journey.

Note: We recommend booking optional activities well in advance with your travel consultant at Nordic Visitor. Please note that some activities are subject to a minimum amount of passengers along with having specific travel departure dates. Contact your travel consultant for further informations.

  • Day 5: Departure

After some last-minute souvenir shopping or exploring the town, it’s time to say goodbye to this land of adventure. Transportation will be provided to the Ilulissat airstrip for your return flight to Iceland.

Note: This tour can be customized to fly from Copenhagen (Denmark) instead of Reykjavik (Iceland), with arrivals available from Monday to Saturday. Contact us for details.

Reviews

We don’t like to brag, so we’ll let our happy customers do it for us.

Awe inspiring

We had a fabulous time, didn't want to leave. Best was the 5 hour husky sled day, lovely, dog loving men guiding us, felt quite safe. The massive icebergs were so impressive and awe inspiring our strong little boat fell silent. The guided walk round Ilulisaat was so informative, would loved to have been taken to the old settlement. Such a different way of thinking about how we live our lives. A real travel experience that will stay with us. Thank you.

Greenland's Wild West

We booked the 5 day/4 night Greenland's wild west tour for mid-March 2013. Alexandra, our contact at Nordic Visitor, was incredibly helpful throughout the booking process and provided great information. Our trip to Ilulissat, Greenland and all activities and accommodations while there went off without a hitch and was an amazing experience we will never forget. Highly recommend!!!

Other
  • This tour originates in Iceland. Due to flight times between Iceland and Greenland, passengers may need to spend a night before departure and/or on return in Reykjavik. Our travel consultants can assist with booking accommodation in Reykjavik on request.
  • The winter climate in Greenland can be quite unpredictable with average temperatures ranging from -3 to -20° Celsius. Due to Arctic conditions and sudden weather changes, we recommend bringing warm, weatherproof outerwear with plenty of thermal layers and insulated walking boots. It is also nice to bring sunglasses to reduce the glare from the sun’s reflection on the snow.
  • The itinerary can change without notice due to weather conditions.
  • Additional warm outerwear is generally provided for the optional outdoor activities.
  • The currency in Greenland is Danish Krona (DKK). We recommend bringing some Danish currency or a debit card (bank card) with a 4-digit PIN number for cash withdrawals at ATM machines.
  • Travel insurance is highly recommended
  • See our Travel Guide for more information about weather conditions, what to pack, currency and other practical information about travelling in Greenland.
