  • Day 1: Arrival to the Arctic!

Depart from Reykjavik Domestic Airport for a flight to the charming Arctic village of Ilulissat, beautifully situated at the mouth of the 56 kilometre-long Ilulissat Icefjord. On arrival, you will be transferred to your accommodation for the next four nights.

    Highlights
  • Day 2: Meet the Pioneering People

Get to know Ilulissat and its people with a guided culture walk! Your guide will tell you all about the history of this town and introduce you to the native Greenlandic culture and daily life of the local inhabitants. The tour also includes a visit to local fishermen and hunters at the “Brædtet” trading post by the harbour as well as a stop to the birthplace of the famous explorer Knud Rasmussen.

Included activities: Guided cultural and historical city walk (2 hours)

    Highlights
  • Day 3: Dog-sledding Adventure

Today is your chance to experience the traditional mode of transportation in the Arctic! Led by an experienced local musher, you will enjoy a 5-hour dog-sledding tour to a small hunting cabin in Aallaniarfik, situated about 15 kilometres from Ilulissat at the edge of the beautiful Icefjord. On the journey to the cabin, the trail weaves through rugged, hilly terrain so you will get a good feeling for the dogs’ sled-pulling skills. On return to Ilulissat, you can enjoy the rest of the day as you wish.

Included activities: Dog-sledding tour (5 hours)

    Highlights
  • Day 4: From Icebergs to Auroras - Free Day

This day is completely up to you. You can explore the town at your leisure or choose from a variety of optional day tours in the area, including helicopter rides over the mighty ice cap and motorboat tours among the maze of icebergs off the coast.

Or if you’re a hiking enthusiast, the Sermermiut Valley just a few kilometres from Ilulissat offers spectacular viewpoints from a number of marked trails that you can explore at your own pace.

Note: We recommend booking any optional activities in advance with your travel consultant at Nordic Visitor, although you are also welcome to book them at your hotel in Ilulissat after arrival. Please also keep in mind that the northern lights are a natural phenomenon, so sightings cannot be guaranteed.

Arctic Winter Adventure, March 2016

Awe inspiring

We had a fabulous time, didn't want to leave. Best was the 5 hour husky sled day, lovely, dog loving men guiding us, felt quite safe. The massive icebergs were so impressive and awe inspiring our strong little boat fell silent. The guided walk round Ilulisaat was so informative, would loved to have been taken to the old settlement. Such a different way of thinking about how we live our lives. A real travel experience that will stay with us. Thank you.

Greenland's Wild West

We booked the 5 day/4 night Greenland's wild west tour for mid-March 2013. Alexandra, our contact at Nordic Visitor, was incredibly helpful throughout the booking process and provided great information. Our trip to Ilulissat, Greenland and all activities and accommodations while there went off without a hitch and was an amazing experience we will never forget. Highly recommend!!!

Everything about this tour

50% deposit required: This package requires a deposit payment of 50% of the total price at the time of booking since it contains certain travel arrangements. See details

Customizations: This tour can be customized to meet your needs, including additional nights in Reykjavik and/or Greenland on request. We can also combine other Iceland packages with this tour.

Important note about dog-sledding: Dog sled tours in Greenland are a truly authentic experience, as the sleds are driven by actual Greenlandic hunters. They usually do not speak much English, but they are skilled at understanding gestures or, as they like to call it, “the international language of charades”.

Other
  • This tour originates in Iceland. Due to flight times between Iceland and Greenland, passengers may need to spend a night before departure and/or on return in Reykjavik. Our travel consultants can assist with booking accommodation in Reykjavik on request.
  • Activities included in this package, such as dog sledding, are dependent on weather conditions and minimum participant requirements. In the rare event that an activity is cancelled for these reasons, you will be refunded for that activity.
  • The winter climate in Greenland can be quite unpredictable with average temperatures ranging from -3 to -20° Celsius. Due to Arctic conditions and sudden weather changes, we recommend bringing warm, weatherproof outerwear with plenty of thermal layers and insulated walking boots. It is also nice to bring sunglasses to reduce the glare from the sun’s reflection on the snow.
  • The itinerary can change without notice due to weather conditions.
  • Additional warm outerwear is generally provided for the optional outdoor activities.
  • The currency in Greenland is Danish Krona (DKK). We recommend bringing some Danish currency or a debit card (bank card) with a 4-digit PIN number for cash withdrawals at ATM machines.
  • Travel insurance is highly recommended
  • See our Travel Guide for more information about weather conditions, what to pack, currency and other practical information about travelling in Greenland.
